Taxi operators and owners have been given until Monday, August 24, to withdraw commuter vehicles found to be in dangerous mechanical condition.
The directive comes from Byamukama, who has ordered police to begin a 100-day operation targeting taxis operating in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area while in poor mechanical condition.
The operation will mainly target old and dilapidated 14-seater taxis, commonly known as “Ganyegenya,” which authorities say pose a serious risk to passengers and other road users.
Byamukama says poorly maintained vehicles should not be allowed to turn Uganda’s roads into death traps, insisting that public transport vehicles must be roadworthy, safe and fit for service.
